There
is a builder (also an agent) in town creating a breakthrough
in homebuilding. He is designing modern homes with
sophisticated architecture. What makes these so compelling
is that the prices are on par with "ordinary" houses.
This one is located on a
tree-covered cul-de-sac lot in Apache Shores at 2404 Eagle
Point (just south of Hudson's On
The Bend restaurant on Hwy. 620). The layout has three
bedrooms and about 2,320 square feet. Just completed, the
home is built along the upper ridge of a gently sloping
hill. The long "footprint" unfolds as a series of "nested"
towers and living spaces connected by ribbon walls of glass.
Downstairs, the floors are
high-polish stained concrete that resemble the patina of
worn saddle leather. With the linear plane of the floors,
and the extra high ceilings, the house is perfect for anyone
who yearns to decorate with large pieces of art.
An Interesting Kitchen
There is something fascinating about this kitchen (see large
photo bottom of this page), and you will not pick up on it
unless you come see it for yourself. For starters, the
kitchen is meant to be the hub of activity. It is positioned
in the ideal spot so that in one big visual gulp you take in
the view of interior and outdoor spaces. This breathtaking
effect is made possible by something that is missing. Think
about the kitchen you have now. You can probably envision
reaching up to put things in the cabinets, but here there is
no such obstruction to break the line of sight. None of the
cabinets that overlook the living room and back yard setting
are more than waist high. Imagine the benefits. What about
dinner-and-a-movie night? It is so cozy here, you can stand
in the kitchen, pour a glass of wine, start a movie while
you prepare a festive meal.
Or how about this? Keep in mind the
house is oriented so the view through the windows is totally
private--no drapes are required. So, on a chilly weekend,
you can peacefully start your morning by watching a fog
cloud hover over the treetops while you make fresh
coffee--the home has a calming and meditative spirit.
Zen-like Master, Complete
With Hanger-Style Door
You will also give high marks for this oh-so inviting master
bedroom and bath. It is laid out split level style. The main
sleeping area gets its own nature view through a set of
glass-framed doors. It would not be unusual to see deer
outside your window. In every other house you have seen, you
walk through a "regular" doorway to get to the bath area.
Your head will spin when you see what the builder has
created here. Instead of a "regular" door, these two spaces
are connected by a wall-sized opening divided by an
oversized sliding door (like a giant pocket door). It is
very dramatic to slide the door open. Do so, and you see
wide steps (all stained concrete as in the rest of the
house) that lead down to a serene and Zen-like bath area
that is as large as the master bedroom itself.
You will think you are entering a
spa as you slip into this sprawling, light-filled space.
Another set of glass doors leads out to a small porch. The
far end of the bath is anchored by a minimalist-style tub.
Had a grueling and hectic week? This space has
s-a-n-c-t-u-a-r-y written all over it. It is easy to
envision the bath area decorated with flowers, candles and
rolled-up towels. When you need your world to spin a little
slower, this will be your favorite spot. This area is so
large and open, you could use it with mats for stretching,
exercise or yoga.
Dual Purpose Garage, Waterfront
Park
The builder loves a detached garage because it creates a
dual purpose room. Note the ribbed-glass panels in the
single span garage door (photo on the web). This is not only
more aesthetically appealing, but it also fills the garage
with natural light. If, for example, you have kids, you can
let them play here if it is cold or raining--this way the
space works like an outdoor play room (the "glass" panels
are actually made from high-impact polycarbonate). You could
also use this area for a workshop or art studio.
And are you aware of all the natural
amenities that exist in Apache Shores? There is a private
waterfront park (with boat ramp and grills) just a few
blocks from this house (photo on the web). There are miles
and miles of hiking trails, and there is a "secret"
landlocked lake that only Apache Shores residents seem to
know about. It is lined with rock canyon walls and
accessible only on foot. If you are into kayaking, you will
love the adventure.
Here is your chance to own an
architectural masterpiece. It is sparkling new, on a private
setting covered with trees and teeming with wildlife, and
there are extras like the waterfront park. Trust your
impulse.
